Robert McGill, 23, is also accused of taking a screwdriver and a large kitchen knife into a hospital after the alleged attack.

The charges relate to an incident at Acton Street, where McGill lives, early on Sunday morning.

The victim was taken to hospital with a stab wound to the chest.

His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

McGill appeared before Belfast Magistrates’ Court on Monday charged with attempted murder and two counts of possessing offensive weapons in a public place, namely the Mater Hospital.

As the allegations were put to him he replied from the dock: “I understand.”

A detective constable confirmed he could connect him to the charges.

No further details of the incident were disclosed during the hearing.

Defence solicitor Niall O’Neill did not question the officer or seek bail.

He told the court: “My client is 23 and unfortunately there are some mental health issues which need to be explored before he mounts a bail application.”

District Judge Fiona Bagnall remanded McGill in custody to appear again by video-link on 19 October.
